I was told that my Lingit name- Aandeiyeen (pronounced “On-day-yeen”) roughly translates to “the one who watches over the land.” Whether this is accurate, I run with it given that Tlingits have traditionally been the stewards of our ancestral lands. This blog serves as testimony as to why we need uphold traditional stewardship practices and values.
Where ever we from and what ever our history may be- everyone depends on healthy surroundings to be healthy ourselves. This is why I defend the integrity of the land; it is for the spiritual, cultural, and physical health of the people- past, present, and especially future- that I choose to watch over the land.
